Julia  Isabel van der Veen is  an Amsterdam based production designer and art-director specialized in graphic  design.  Her work includes set-design , set decoration, and  custom graphic-prop making for short and feature film, commercials and music videos.

I’m Julia Isabel van der Veen (1995),  a production designer and art director based in Amsterdam (NL), working across short and feature films, music videos, and commercials. I often collaborate with young and emerging directors and artists experimenting with visual storytelling.  

Central to my work is a somewhat childish curiosity that drives me to immerse myself in the scenario, characters, and director’s vision of each project. I find it important to peel back all layers of a narrative — such as emotional subtext, social context and character psychology — and translate these into my set designs.  I always pay close attention to historical references and hidden symbolism that enrich the visual storytelling.

With a background in graphic design, I specialise in graphic props. This can be a band poster,  a special vintage packaging, or the identity of an exhibition space appearing on screen. I also work with animation software to create interactive apps and websites for digital use.  

Next to my work in film, I run a graphic design studio creating artwork for alternative music and art events. I also contribute to OSEA, a spatial design studio that designs and builds custom furniture and interiors for private homes and showrooms.

I’m available to collaborate either as a production designer/art director, leading the overall set design, or as a graphic designer, responsible for graphic elements within a production.  

I can also contribute technical knowledge and hands-on construction skills for the building of décor and installations.

I’m always open to think along with any idea (even if it seems overly ambitious or weird)
